Chris Thorne of Spruce Properties - Member Feature
In December, we had the chance to sit down with Chris Thorne, Owner, and Operator behind Spruce Properties here in Winnipeg! Chris hosts his business at TableSpace in our private offices and has loved his experience thus far. As Chris explains, it’s a perfect place with little distractions, a sense of community, and a friendly atmosphere that welcomes you in with open arms!
Now to get into Chris’s story. Chris attended the University of Manitoba, specifically the Asper School of Business, majoring in finance. It’s also in the Asper School of Business where Chris found his passion for entrepreneurship; in fact, Chris was never really into entrepreneurship until he took a university course where his interest in starting his own business was sparked. His passion for finance and investing started Chris’s career as he began buying small properties, flipping houses, working in construction, and always wanting to do hands-on work.
Moving now into what Spruce Properties does, Chris started Spruce Properties to own and manage residential properties. After discovering his interest in entrepreneurship and investing, he knew he wanted to take it to the next level by starting Spruce Properties. As a successful entrepreneur for years now, Chris has provided five tips for students who wish to start their own business or even those unsure about what they want to do.
Tip #1 - Put Yourself Out There
Tip #2 - Get comfortable with being uncomfortable because that’s where growth happens
Tip #3 - Don’t go with the highest-paying job. Go with something where you can grow, gain new opportunities, and benefit yourself to become a better professional.
Tip #4 - Work in a variety of different places to see what you want out of your career
Tip #5 - Understand small failures are good to have because you can learn from them
Similar to many other businesses this year, the pandemic has pushed Chris to pivot. However, he has found a new community at TableSpace can make his business thrive while being productive along the way!
